Protospiel Chicago 2021 Recap

Support me on Patreon!

This past weekend I attended Protospiel Chicago, my first in-person playtesting event (aside from a couple of small, local game nights where I've playtested a few things) since the one-day Protospiel Madison Mini back in February 2020!  It felt really great to be back at a table playing prototypes with friends I hadn't seen in two years, even if we had to wear masks.  This year I brought six games to playtest, all of which didn't exist at the last full Protospiel I attended.  I was a bit nervous since only Rolling Seas had a lot of play (and the Current Events expansion I was testing was still new).  None of the games had been playtested more than once or twice with anyone other than myself, and Polyhedral Prix had never been played with anyone.  But the event was a great success!

My games were a hit with people asking to play them so much that on Saturday I barely got to play anyone else's games.  Sunday I made a point to make the rounds and try out others' games, but I did end the event with two more plays of my games.  I came home with some great feedback to ponder, a few tweaks to make, some rules to clarify, and an idea for a new game bouncing around in my head.  Plus I made a few new friends over the weekend, met a few online friends in person, and got to see a bunch of older friends.  So I call that a success!

In all, I played 8 games by 7 different designers, plus I had 6 of my games played: Rolling Seas w/ Current Events expansion, Duct Tape Roll, Go Make A Hike, Polyhedral Potions, Polyhedral Perils, and Polyhedral Prix.  I played other designers' games for about 6.5 hours and had my games played for a bit over 7 hours (plus rules and feedback on both sides).  So I used a bit more time than I gave this year, but people wanted to play my games!

Read on for a full recap of each game I played (or taught), including some thoughts on how my own games went.  As usual, I'll include the designer, who I played with, and also three ratings, from 1-5.

Press Release - Travel back to billions of years ago and find the path to Life in AEON - The Emergence of Life

Travel back to billions of years ago and find the path to Life

AEON is a board game for 2 to 6 players, ages 12+, which was developed by scientists from the Collaborative Research Center and the Deutsches Museum. The game is based on current scientific knowledge about the origins of the life on Earth, but requires no specific knowledge to play.

Copies of the game are available for pre-order through a crowdfunding campaign from September 8th to September 13th 2021.

In AEON, you represent an environment in early Earth, from deep-sea hydrothermal vents to the surface of comets in space. By drawing and placing different tiles, you and your opponents build a network of chemical reactions to produce resources like complex biomolecules and energy.

Investing those resources, you can develop a basic life form with a membrane, a metabolism, and replication. The first to establish all three features wins the game!

You can find more about AEON, the rules, and its developers on the game’s website: https://aeon-game.eu/aeon/

Pre-order the game and special bonus artwork like posters and bookmarks on the crowdfunding campaign: https://www.startnext.com/en/aeon

Press Release - Winchester Mystery House teams with Deep Water Games on Floor Plan: The Winchester Mystery House®

August 16th, 2021

Winchester Mystery House® Comes to Life in a New Board Game
Winchester Mystery House teams with Deep Water Games on
Floor Plan: The Winchester Mystery House®

From Deep Water Games and The Winchester Mystery House LLC comes Floor Plan: The Winchester Mystery House, based on the most extraordinary and bizarre house ever built.  It is a sequel to Deep Water’s 2020 release Floor Plan, which was nominated for the Board Game Geek Award and is now on its 4th printing.  Floor Plan:  The Winchester Mystery House will be available in retail stores across the U.S. in Spring 2022.

In Floor Plan: The Winchester Mystery House, players take on the role of an architect designing the house for Sarah Winchester. Each round, a pair of dice are rolled, and players act simultaneously, using the dice to design the most mysterious and eccentric estate in the world. The design goals featured in the game are all real architectural and design features of the Winchester Mystery House, ranging from room designs to decor. One game might have you building the iconic Seance room, while another might spotlight the Daisy Bedroom where Sarah Winchester was allegedly trapped during the 1906 earthquake. Each game features a different six of the thirty goals, so when you play again, you’ll have a whole new experience. After all, Sarah is always building...
Floor Plan: The Winchester Mystery House brings new and accessible gameplay to the Floor Plan line, from building on multiple levels using dry erase transparencies to the new unlockable Spirit bonuses,” says game designer John Brieger. “Living just a few miles from the Winchester Mystery House, it’s been incredibly fun bringing such an iconic local landmark to life.”

Winchester Mystery House is a landmark mansion in San Jose, CA, once the personal residence of Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester and heiress to a large portion of the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune. After losing her husband and child, Sarah left their home in New Haven, CT and moved out west to San Jose, where she bought an eight-room farmhouse and began what could only be described as the world’s longest home renovation. Construction continued around the clock for 38 years, as the original home grew into the world’s most unusual and sprawling mansion in what some say was an effort to confuse any spirits bent on seeking revenge for their death by rifle.

“Deep Water Games is proud to be working with the Winchester Mystery House and Brieger Creative on this project, and we couldn't be more excited about what we have in store for you,” says Deep Water Games President Jacob Way.

“Winchester Mystery House is undoubtedly one of the most uniquely designed homes in the world, so we were thrilled when the design team at Deep Water Games approached us,” said Walter Magnuson, General Manager of the Winchester Mystery House. “The Floor Plan game feels like a natural fit for Sarah Winchester’s incredible home. We hope that after playing, Floor Plan: The Winchester Mystery House, even more fans will be inspired to come visit.”

Floor Plan: The Winchester Mystery House is designed by John Brieger of Brieger Creative. Brieger is a board game developer based in Sunnyvale, CA with a background in qualitative research. After leaving Apple, he founded the board game development studio Brieger Creative. Brieger Creative are the developers on the original Floor Plan game, which was designed by Marek Tupy, as well as on several other roll and write style games, including Cartographers and Long Shot the Dice Game.
Deep Water Games is a Midwest publisher and distributor of board games and board game accessories. Deep Water Games is a division of Ox Eye Media.

Floor Plan: The Winchester Mystery House is the second collaboration between The Winchester Mystery House LLC and Ox Eye Media after The Winchester Mystery House comic series releasing in October. Published by Source Point Press, the comic series is a masterfully crafted horror tale written by Joshua Werner and illustrated by Dustin Irvin, taking readers into the non-stop construction of “The house that spirits built."

For more information on the board game visit deepwatergaming.com. For more information on the comic series, go to sourcepointpress.com. Email: cameron@oxeyemedia.com for inquiries or interview opportunities.

Weird Giraffe Games Launches 10th Kickstarter, Wicked & Wise, Designed by Fertessa Allyse

August 4th, 2021. US-based board game publisher Weird Giraffe Games is launching their 8th Kickstarter in August 2021. The game, Wicked and Wise, is a trick-taking game, in the same vein as classic games such as Spades and Hearts.

Designed by Fertessa Allyse, Wicked and Wise puts players into teams of Dragons and Mice, who are working together to expand the Dragon’s Hoard. Dragons play cards and try to win tricks; mice play their cards and use special abilities in order to give their Dragon partner an edge.

At the end of each hand, the winning pair can choose to get gold or treasure. The treasure cards provide the dragon with powerful special abilities that they can use in future rounds. But, the team needs to be careful - whatever they don’t choose goes to their opponent!

The teams vary based on the total number of players in the game; some player counts require a player to play two hands of cards (the “Duel”). The game also includes additional rules that can limit the amount of “table talk” between the partners in a team.

Wicked and Wise is designer Fertessa Allyse’s second Kickstarter game. Her first Kickstarter game, Book of Villainy, was launched by Gold Seal Games and funded on July 1st, 2021.

Art for Wicked and Wise was created by acclaimed artist Beth Sobel. Sobel has also created art for a number of other board games, including Herbaceous, Cascadia, and Wingspan.

Wicked and Wise launched on Kickstarter on Tuesday, August 11th. Inquiries for more information and press contacts can be directed to Weird Giraffe Games Founder, Carla Kopp, at contact@weirdgiraffegames.com.

See more information on the Weird Giraffe Games’ website https://weird-giraffe-games.square.site/wicked-and-wise

Get Rolling Seas Before The Price Increase!

My Crowd Sale for Rolling Seas was a big success in April.  It's now been delivered and has been getting played by people around the country.  I'm thrilled at the reception it's been getting, even being called "a possible Cartographers killer", which is high praise indeed, since Cartographers is one of my favorite games!

If you didn't have a chance to get in on the Crowd Sale, now is the best time to buy a copy.  Next week The Game Crafter will be increasing prices for a number of their components (for the first time in years), so the price of Rolling Seas (as well as most other TGC games) will likely be going up a few dollars.  As always, I keep the base price of my games as low as I can, so I'm not really making any profit on them (usually just a few pennies since TGC rounds prices up to the nearest dollar).  So if the component cost increases the game cost will increase, too.

So if you'd like to grab a copy of Rolling Seas, the expansions, or any of my other games (or any of the other amazing games on TGC), order before July 26.  On July 26 you'll see price increases across the board.  Head to https://TheGameCrafter.com/games/Rolling-Seas to order today!
